Retro rugs can have great colors and crazy patterns to them, and often, they can be a real problem for interior designers. But, articles such as this one make the whole decoration thing seem like a piece of cake. We’ll share with you some tips and tricks on implementing retro rugs in your home, starting with the hallways and moving on from there.

Color and pattern can be fun and they can totally change the place. Choosing it wisely can make your home look chic and interesting to visitors. If one thing’s for sure is that you can never go wrong with a retro area rug, but you need to think outside of the box and be creative with it.

Implementing a retro area rug in your home

Start with the hallways

Retro area rugs can come out as too much if you implement them in a living room with too much color. If you’re new to designing, you might want to play it safe, and the hallways are a great place. They have fewer elements than the other rooms and way fewer shelves with ornaments and smaller details. Not to mention that retro rugs have patterns and color added to them, so walking over them with outside shoes won’t be that visible.

Still, maintaining and cleaning your rugs is really important, so cleaning any stains, vacuuming regularly, and having them professionally cleaned at least once a year is really important if you want to prolong the life of your rug. To decorate around the rug and combine it with other things in the hallway, you can add some vintage ornaments or a softer, yellow lightbulb that will warm up the place.

Accentuate different parts of the room

Retro rugs are quite visible and eye-catching, so you can use that to your advantage. Once you walk into the rug store, you’ll see that there are different shapes and sizes. Smaller rugs work best for smaller stools where you put pictures, plants, and ornaments. It accentuates the area and visitors will definitely pay closer attention to it. You can also put it in front of bigger elements, such as your bookshelves, to accentuate that certain part of the room.

Accentuating bigger elements can be a bit tricky, but not impossible. Grab one of those long, rectangle retro rugs with tassels and throw them in front of your fireplace or put the around the bed in the guest room. Bonus for you if you buy bed sheets in the same shade as the rug and combine them for a nice, pleasant outcome.

Layer it up

Retro area rugs are usually thin, and this is a flaw in the wintertime. To be able to enjoy their colors and patterns all year round, you need to invest in under rug mats, or simply layer the retro rugs over a neutral colored carpet. A light-colored carpet would work the best, as it would make the retro rug stand out more. This will provide you with the warmth you need, and your home will look chic and stylish at the same time.

To prevent rugs and carpets from slipping, turning, and forming weird bumps, you need to invest in liners that will go under them. A DIY project to keep them in place is using double-sided tape, but over time, this will ruin the material of the rug, and the floorings as well, taking the polish off of them. It may cost a bit more, but liners are something that will prolong the life of the carpets and rugs in your home.

Connect or divide rooms and places

If your home has an open floor plan, you can easily connect or divide the rooms with area rugs. For connecting rooms, invest in retro rugs with the same colors and patterns. If you want to play around a bit, choose similar colors and patterns, but close enough for people to see the connection. Choosing completely different retro rugs on the other hand will definitely divide the space, and you can use them either in the same room or in different rooms to separate them from the rest. Either way, a small detail such as this one can definitely change the whole outlook of your home.

Also, by opting for smaller area rugs with the same color and pattern, you can connect different parts of the same room. For instance, put the same patterned area rug in front of the fireplace, in front of the bookshelf, and under the rocking chair that you bought years ago. You’ll be combining vintage, and with a few other smaller alterations, such as different lighting, art, and ornaments,  you’ve achieved the final goal of making your home retro and chic.
