Tips for How to Pack and Move Electronics

Moving furniture may be burdensome, but for many people, moving electronics is downright scary. The thought of tangled wires, missing connectors and the need to reattach all the parts properly is enough to cause nightmares for even the calmest of people. But what can be done when you must unplug your carefully connected cables in order to move? You’ll need to prepare carefully to pack your electronics and move them with care so that you’ll be able to reconnect everything in your new home. Here are some ways to pack small electronics in a safe and logical way:

1. Make a copy of all important documents or files before disassembling any computers or storage devices. You can use an external hard drive or online backup system to complete this task.
2. Take pictures or video of all cables so you’ll remember where they plug into.
3. In addition, label all the wires with colored tags so you’ll know which connects to which.
4. If necessary, write down a list of instructions to accompany the pictures and tags.
5. If possible, pack electronics into their original packaging.
6. If you must repack electronics, carefully snake the wire into a manageable bundle and secure it with a twist tie or rubber band.
7. Tape the wire onto the machine with which it belongs. Use tape that will adhere strongly but will not damage your electronics such as electrical tape or duct tape.
8. If your electronics have spare parts such as ports, adapters or connectors place them in a plastic bag and secure the bag to the equipment, if possible. If it’s not possible to tape the bag to the equipment, place it on top of the equipment in the box so that you’ll know to find it immediately when you’re unpacking.
9. The best way to pack manuals for electronic equipment is to create a folder for all manuals which you’ll put in a safe place during the move. Some people, however, prefer to keep each manual with the associated equipment so they won’t have to locate the folder before reconnecting their electronics.
10. Make sure not to leave any wires loose, as they may get accidentally thrown out with the packing materials.
11. Pack electronics with anti-static packing materials or soft cloths. Do not use packing peanuts (highly static) or newspapers which can scratch screens or other soft surfaces.
12. Remove the ink cartridge(s) from your printer before packing it up. Seal them tightly in a plastic bag to prevent ink from spilling accidentally.

If you’re packing big electronics such as dishwashers or refrigerators, you should follow a slightly different process:

1. All electronics with a cooling element should be defrosted, dried and properly cleaned out. Remove all shelves and accessories and wrap them individually. Place them all within the same moving box.
2. Check with the moving company whether the motor of your appliance needs to be bolted or secured in some way. If so, make sure that it’s unbolted before plugging in your appliance.
3. Pack CD players especially carefully as shocks and beatings can damage the system irreparably.
