Moving for Work? Make it Work!

Moving for business

The opportunity to relocate for business poses challenges that are quite different from the challenges of moving purely because you want to. Job relocation comes with the comfort of knowing that at least you’ll have financial support in your new city. And, if other people from your office are relocating with you, you’ll also have friends. At the very least, even if you’re moving to accept a new job, you’ll have people in your new office to consult with about your new area. If you’re still feeling uncomfortable about your upcoming job relocation, read on to find a handful of reasons why this may just be the best move of your life.

Let’s not be so blind as to think that every job relocation turns out positively. But a positive attitude when approaching your move is the first step to ensure that your experience will be successful. Instead of worrying that your children won’t adjust to their new environment, help them get excited about it by researching all the fun things to do in the area. Help them to understand why it is that you’re moving and what you’ll be doing in your new job. They’ll likely be proud that their parent is doing something that is interesting. Similarly, while it’s normal to worry about your job stability, remember that you’ve decided to relocate because someone, somewhere was impressed with you and wants you to work there. It may take concentration to remain positive but your efforts will surely pay off.

For most people, a significant benefit of moving for work is that the company will assume part or all of the moving expenses. If your boss hasn’t discussed this with you directly, don’t be too shy to ask. You never know what you can get him to agree to unless you ask. Likewise, depending on whether your current company is transferring you or you are moving to accept a completely new job, you may be able to ask for a rental subsidy in your new city.

Of course, you’ll also need to consider your new salary (when relevant) and any additional expenses that you’ll have in your new city. If you’ll be receiving a raise in your new city, congratulations! If you’re not, research the cost of living in your new area and the taxes that are applicable there, and make sure that you’ll be able to afford living there. You may be able to negotiate for an increased salary or additional benefits if you can prove that you’ll truly need it to survive.

Overall, the concept of job relocation provides a lot to be excited about and can provide great opportunities both professionally and personally. Moving for work takes strength of character, ambition and optimism and proving to yourself that you have all of these traits will do wonders for you throughout your life. Worrying is normal, but so is succeeding in your new position – so why not focus on the great opportunities that will be coming your way as you move for work?
