Important Information before Moving to Houston

If you didn't know that Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States, you're not alone. But if you're moving to Houston (or at least thinking about it), you should definitely have a good understanding of the city before you move. To help familiarize you with your future home, I've compiled a list of the top 25 most important facts about Houston. If you're not yet sold on moving to Houston, hopefully this information will help you decide. And if you've already got your Houston movers picked out, I hope that this information will help you get better acquainted with your new city so that you know exactly what to expect.

Weather

1. Winters in Houston are fairly mild, with the average temperature settling at about 63 degrees
2. Summers in Houston are brutally hot, with highs reaching over 90 degrees and the humidity making it feel like over 100 degrees. (Of course, Phoenix gets up to 120 degrees, so comparatively, so if you're moving from Phoenix, you may think Phoenix is cool!)
3. As a result of the stifling humidity, it's been suggested that Houston is the most air conditioned city in the world.
4. Houston is prone to intense thunderstorms which can become tornados. Significant amounts of rainfall often cause part of the city to be flooded.

Economy

1. The Port of Houston is the 2nd largest port in the United States
2. Houston houses the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical center in the world. Over 50,000 employees work at the Texas Medical Center. (Although this is not a specific reason to move to Houston unless you're a medical professional, it might be helpful to know in case of an emergency!)
3. Houston is second only to New York City as the host of the most Fortune 500 companies in the United States.
4. Houston houses over 5,000 energy-related companies, and is largely considered to be the "energy capital" of the world.
5. Houston is the home to NASA's Johnson Space Center, where astronauts regularly lift off for space.
6. For this reason, "Houston" was the first word recorded as being uttered on the moon in July of 1969
7. The cost of living in Houston is approximately 14% lower than the national average cost of living
8. The average price for a home in Houston is about $115,000.
9. The approximate unemployment rate in Houston is 6%, which is well below the national average.
10. Houston's Gross Area Product is higher than most countries' Gross Domestic Product.

Culture

1. The (Reliant) Astrodome, the first domed sports stadium was built in Houston.
2. Reliant Stadium, the first stadium with a retractable roof, is also located in Houston
3. Houston has over 11,000 restaurants, and Houston residents eat out more than residents of every other US city.
4. Nolan Ryan was raised in Houston
5. So were Beyonce, Clint Black and Patrick Swayze

Misc. Facts

1. Houston has the 5th most ozone pollution of all US cities.
2. Houston is notorious for its high crime rate which rose dramatically following the influx of refugees from Hurricane Katrina. Local police are continually striving to improve the safety of the city and to protect the city's residents from violent crimes.
3. Houston's public transportation system does not yet connect the city to its suburbs, which results in a high number of people driving to work. (You may want to consider this when moving to Houston).
