Florida Movers and Florida Moving Advice

Congratulations on deciding to move to Florida! Despite the excitement of this momentous decision, the stress of moving to Florida is often compounded by the myriad of tasks that must be completed shortly after arrival. If you’d planned on relocating to Florida as a relaxing escape, you probably aren’t thinking about all of the paperwork that needs to be done – but you should be. With a bit of advance planning moving to Florida can be simple and stress-free. Here are some things you should know before you move:

Driving Regulations and Licensing

1. When you move to Florida you are obligated to register your vehicle within 10 (ten) days of either: becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. Registering your motor vehicle goes hand in hand with the titling process.
2. In order to register your car you must have valid Florida car insurance (which can be purchased from most insurance agencies).
3. You will also need a valid Florida driver's license.
4. If you did not have a driver's license before moving to Florida, be aware that you will need to take a 4-hour Drug Alcohol Training Awareness (DATA) course before applying for a driver's license.
5. The minimum age for requesting a learner's permit in Florida is 15.
6. 16 and 17-year-old drivers can apply for an operator's permit which will enable them to drive alone during restricted hours or with an adult at any time of day.

Marriage Rules and Regulations

1. Unlike New York State which imposes a 24-hour waiting period between the time that you apply for the marriage license and the time of the wedding ceremony, Florida rules state that you must wait 3 days between receiving the license and getting married. (If you take the state-sanctioned marriage preparation course within 12 months prior to requesting a marriage license, this waiting time can be waived.)
2. A marriage license in Florida costs about $95.
3. No blood tests are required to receive a marriage license in Florida.
4. Same-sex marriage is currently prohibited in Florida.

Tax Rules and Regulations

1. Florida is one of only 7 states that do not impose personal income tax. The other states include Alaska, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Although this may not be a real reason to move to Florida, it is definitely a significant benefit of living within the state's borders.
2. Although Florida does not have income tax, the state does impose a 6% sales tax on most purchases. In addition, each Florida county has the right to add its own country surtax, which is 6-7.5% on top of the state's 6% sales tax.
3. As is the case in most states, Florida's property tax fluctuates depending on the type of house and the neighborhood it is located in. Still, Florida is known for having one of the highest property tax rates in the nation.

Although relocating to Florida is particularly popular among the senior population, it's important to remember that Florida is also growing in popularity among younger crowds (as well as with illegal immigrants of all ages). In fact, about 2/3 of Florida's population was born outside of Florida's borders. Think of this when you're moving to Florida, and remember that you're not alone - you will succeed in your new state, and you will enjoy all of the exciting opportunities that Florida has to offer.
